City Of Vallejo
Our story begins with General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, who saw the promise of this area in 1844. Named after him, and twice the State Capitol (the last time in 1852) Vallejo was incorporated in 1868. Vallejo’s prime location makes it a wonderful overnight destination for those looking to explore the treasures of San Francisco’s North Bay. We are located close to San Francisco, Oakland, and the wine producing areas of Napa and Sonoma. Vallejo offers all the comforts and attractions of a large city, set in a semi-rural setting. The government consists of a seven person City Council with members selected at large for four year terms. A Mayor is also elected for a four year term and is the presiding officer of the City Council. The City Manager and City Attorney are appointed by the City Council and serve as administrators of the city staff and chief legal advisor. The City government functions are carried out by the approximately 500 full and part-time city personnel.

Vallejo grew into an important shipping and naval center. Prosperity attracted other businesses; a tannery, three breweries, hotels, a cigar factory, a carriage plant, an ice cream plant and creamery, and the Sperry Mills flour plant that is still in operation.

Although closed in the spring of 1996, the once secret Mare Island Naval Shipyard is now available for group tours to take advantage of its unique history: from the shipyard’s beautiful St. Peter’s Chapel, with its priceless Tiffany windows, to the magnificent homes on “Officers Row”, to the historic dry docks, where hundreds of ships were built since the shipyard’s founding in 1854. Mare Island is a true historical treasure. The oldest Naval installation

on the west coast offers well over one hundred years of unique military history. Mare Island, as mentioned, has converted to civilian control and remains an important community asset for economic development opportunities. The potential economic growth is still untapped, though over 90 business educational enterprises have taken up residence on Mare Island.

Vallejo is indeed, a mixture of the old and new. Vallejo’s own rich history can also be viewed by a tour of the city’s Heritage & Historic Districts, featuring homes dating back to the 1800’s. These beautiful restored Victorian homes and business fronts are plentiful in Vallejo and add to its charm. In addition, Vallejo has built some up scale residential communities, like Hiddenbrooke, which features a championship 18 hole golf course and club house. A person wishing to relocate to Vallejo can find homes from the mid $200,000’s to the high $800,000’s or in between. The old downtown is undergoing a complete “renovation” with new boutique stores and hi-tech companies occupying some of the former stores. The City Fathers are being very careful to restore an “old downtown” feel to the central business district to attract both business and clients.

Vallejo enjoys a mild, Mediterranean climate year-round with gentle breezes off the water. Since Vallejo’s weather is beautiful nearly year-round, you can take advantage of a wide range of outdoor activities. The city’s sparkling waterfront and municipal marina provide a spectacular backdrop for sailing, fishing, wind surfing, jet skiing and more. And
golfers will find many challenging courses on which to test their skills in and around Vallejo.
